Political Action

The Bowling Green/Warren County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People unequivocally opposes Kentucky Senate Bill Six introduced by State Senator Mike Wilson, 32nd Senate District. It is a deliberate effort to reshape public higher education according to ideological and partisan political standards.

Senate Bill Six, a threat to a healthy democracy…

Undermines Freedom of Speech: Restricting and dictating which discussions are allowed infringe upon individuals’ rights to express their views and experiences, curtailing the principles of free speech and expression.

Threatens Employability and Market Attractiveness: In a global job market that values diversity and intercultural competence, Senate Bill Six puts Kentucky graduates at a disadvantage in their careers due to a lack of exposure and understanding of diverse perspectives.

Threatens Academic Freedom: Restricting discussions on diversity or other pre-determined topics may set a precedent for limitations in discussing other contentious topics, posing a threat to the broader concept of academic freedom.

Inhibits Critical Thinking and Academic Progress: Open discussions on issues contribute to a sense of belonging and inclusivity among students, faculty, and staff.

Ignores Systemic Inequities: Overlooking the need for diversity initiatives, colleges fail to address issues framed by history that are longstanding and continue to hinder academic and professional success for marginalized groups.

Abdicates the State’s Ethical and Moral Responsibility: Institutions of higher education have a moral imperative to foster inclusivity and equality.

Alienates Potential Benefactors: Limiting these efforts may lead to alienating potential donors, impacting financial support, and hindering an institution’s growth and development.

Senate Bill 93 is similar to Senate Bill 6, however, it focuses on dismantling DEI initiatives in K-12.

The Bowling Green/Warren County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People demands that the Kentucky legislature act responsibly and address real challenges that impede the socioeconomic progress of Kentuckians. They must address the high levels of poverty, child abuse, domestic violence, and cancer rates in the state.
